[REVIEW] La Roche Posay – Anti-acne Starter Kit

Hi guys what’s up?

This post is actually way long overdue because I kept procrastinating every weekend, I choose sleeping over anything on the weekend HAHA.

Anyway, today I will be reviewing a skincare product that comes from a French brand, which is La Roche Posay. I heard a lot of good things about this brand and I’ve been eyeing on this brand since a while ago. So, about four weeks ago, I decided to buy the anti-acne starter kit.

The anti-acne starter kit consist of two products, which are Effaclar Duo (+) 15ml and Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel Cleanser 50ml. I’d say that this kit is a pretty good deal as you can try two of their products at a reasonable price, and also if you want to try the effaclar duo, I’d recommend you to try this first before decided to buy the full size version.

Effaclar Duo (+) – Product Claims

  • A blemish treatment that contains micronized benzoyl peroxide (5.5%) to fight acne deep in the skin.
  • Micro-exfoliating LHA provides precise cell by cell exfoliation to clear away dulling cellular debris and oil
  • Non-drying, oil-free, fast absorbing texture
  • A treatment for moderate acne

The product also claimed that the product can penetrate clogged pores to clear blackhead and whiteheads and reduces acne by 60% in 10 days. It’s also paraben-free, oil-free, fragrance free, and non-commedogenic.

Anyway, this product contains a LHA (Lipo Hydroxy Acid) which is a mild exfoliator, LHA is kinda the same with salicylic acid which both tend to dissolve in oils, fat, and lipid. However, LHA exfoliation process is slower and gentler compared to other chemical exfoliator, as LHA is more lipophilic. (source)

Benzoyl Peroxide 5.5% (Acne Medication) • Water • Isostearyl Alcohol • Glycerin • Pentylene Glycol • Silica • Carbomer • Capryloyl Salicylic Acid • Potassium Hydroxide • Tocopheryl Acetate • Acrylates/c10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer • Disodium EDTA • Epilobium Angustioflium Flower/leaf/stem Extrac

Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel Cleanser – Products Claims

  • Gently cleanses dirt and oil while respecting the skin’s pH balance at 5.5
  • Zinc purifies skin and helps remove excess oil with a clear, refreshing texture.
  • Use as a daily face wash for oily skin
  • Soap-free. Paraben-free. Alcohol-free. Oil Free.

Water • Sodium Laureth Sulfate • PEG-8 • Coco-Betaine • Hexylene Glycol • Sodium Chloride • PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate • Zinc PCA • Sodium Hydroxide • Citric Acid • Sodium Benzoate • Phenoxyethanol • Caprylyl Glycol • Parfum/Fragrance.

This cleanser contains sodium laureth sulfate which is a foaming agent that usually used in cleansing products. Sodium laureth sulfate could be drying, it is milder than sodium lauryl sulfate but I do still feel that it’s drying even for my oily skin. So, I don’t really recommend using any cleansing product that contain sulfate as it can strip off the moisture in your skin.

Texture and Scent

The effaclar duo (+) has a lotion like texture, its absorbed really fast and has a kinda matte finish, meanwhile the cleanser has a gel texture and it produce quite some foam when used. Both has the same scent, I’m not good at describing scent, butits a bit like medicine but its not a bad one, its not too strong.

My thoughts?

I have a mixed feelings about this kit. Firstly, the effaclar duo (+), I’m in love hate relationship with this one. I use this as a spot treatment, in my AM and PM routine before I apply moisturizer. It works really WELL in treating my cystic acne (the large, red, and painful breakouts that cannot and should not be popped), I have three cystic acne on the top of my nose bridge, under my eyebrow, and on my cheek. By the third week, the cystic acne on my nose bridge and under my eyebrow is disappeared but it still left a scars (it’s not that visible, though). The one on my cheek is still in process of healing till now, but I can see that’s its not as worse as before.

However, because it claimed that it can clear out a clogged pores (blackhead and whitehead), I also apply it on my nose where I have some blackheads and whiteheads, but sadly it doesn’t clear up my pores and rather it clogged my pores and making it worse. Everytime I apply it on my nose, at the next day a new whitehead is appeared on the area. It also happen on my cheek (around the cystic acne). So, I really don’t know what to feel about this product, at some point I love it because it worked well in treating the cystic acne, but at the same time it clogged my pores.

Secondly, the effaclar purifying foaming gel cleanser. I don’t really like this cleanser, it’s sometimes way too drying for my skin. But it does a good job in cleaning your makeup residue and cleanse all the dirt in my skin (as seen on the video above).

Repurchase? the effaclar duo (+) yes, the gel cleanser no.

Price: Rp. 279.000 for the anti-acne kit.

So, that’s it for today. Have you tried any products from la roche posay? what is your favorite? Share with me on the comment box below!
