Hi guys! What’s up? I hope your weekend is going well so far.
Today, I will be sharing some tips with you on how I deal with cystic acne. Before I start, I want to tell you that there’s no guarantee that this will work on your skin as we all have different skin type+condition. I only share what’s works on my skin so far.
I’m in my early 20s right now and ever since I hit 20 the acne that appears on my skin is no longer the pop-able one, rather cystic acne started to appear in my skin. Some people might not be familiar with the term cystic acne, so let me tell you a bit about this kind of acne.
Cystic acne is:
- The kind of acne that super painful, swollen, and red, sometimes its itchy too,
- It mainly caused by hormone change,
- Cystic acne is formed on the inner layer of our skin, the bacteria that caused it is trapped deep inside our pores.

Basically, cystic acne looked like that. And one thing I really hate about cystic acne is that it never come to a head, we could never pop it or dries out the pus. One thing to keep in mind is you should not ever try to pop cystic acne, because it only caused the bacteria to spread and form another cystic acne on your face.
The key in treating cystic acne is using a product that can penetrate deep into our skin as the cause of cystic acne is located in the inner layer of our skin. So, rather than using those drying acne treatment, start with BHA based product because BHA can penetrate deep into the pores.
What products am I using?
The first one is La Roche Posay – Effaclar Duo(+). I found this very helpful in reducing the appearance of cystic acne. The product contains benzoyl peroxide (5.5%) which really great for fighting cystic acne, because benzoyl peroxide can kills the bacteria that caused the inflammation. It also contains LHA which is a very mild chemical exfoliator. Full review on this product is available in here.
The second product is chemical exfoliator. I’m using AHA and BHA interchangeably. Salicylic acid (BHA) is really great for treating cystic acne, salicylic acid can penetrate deep down into the pores, so it could target the dead skin cells that trapped inside the pores (I’m using cosrx – BHA blackhead power liquid). Meanwhile, I use AHA to treat the PIH that the cystic acne left behind.
Additional tips
Don’t forget to keep your skin hydrated and don’t overly use those products that I mentioned especially because those has an active ingredients in it. Give your skin sometime to chill and rest from those actives. To reduce the redness try to apply an ice cube for a few seconds to the cystic acne.
So, that’s it! I hope those tips are helpful! Have you experienced cystic acne? how do you treat it? Share with me on the comment box below!
See you later!

Hi virtania! Kalo menurut aku sih lebih baik pake AHA/BHA pas malem aja soalnya chemical exfoliator bikin muka kita lebih sensitif, km bisa pake AHA/BHA bergantian yaa, 2-3x seminggu aja. Jangan lupa pake sunscreen kalo abis pake chemical exfoliator🖤
